APRIL 15 2015- "The donation of an automated external defibrillator to the Great Bay
Regional Volunteer EMS on Friday brought a slew of dedicated volunteers and area
officials to the Squad 85 building on Oak Lane in Little Egg Harbor Township on Friday.
Those gathered were lucky to receive a quick lesson on how easy it is to use an
AED, a portable machine that restores regular heartbeats to someone who has an abrupt
loss of heart function, by delivering a mild electric current to the heart to regulate
heartbeat.

The donation was made possible through a combined effort between the AtlantiCare’s

Heart Institute’s Heart Heroes and the Sean McCarthy Live Passionately Foundation,

each paying half the cost of the new device."

Medical Advice for Rock-N-Roll Marathon Runners
Mom of runner who died on importance of AEDS

. 1Stephanie Harris

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va (WAVY) - If you are one of the thousands signed up to run the Rock-N-Roll half marathon this weekend we have some advice that could save a life.

Patricia McCarthy's son, Sean, died after running last year's race.

Patricia said she would like 10 On Your Side to 'broadcast loud and clear the importance of having (AEDs) at race events'.

An AED can automatically diagnose heart problems and deliver a shock to the heart when needed.

Patricia believes her son might still be alive if one had been used on him.

"Its funny, since he was a little kid he wanted to run fast," Patricia said.

Sean ran track in school and continued to train as an adult. The death of the 27-year-old at end of the 2010 Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach completely shocked his family.

"There's no one to blame, like I said, I don't want anyone else to suffer the loss. Oh my God, the loss of him."

23-year-old Erik Wellumson, of Chesapeake, also died near the finish line of the 2009 Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon.

A study done that same year, showed for every 100,000 who run one will die.

Dr. Lewis Maharan, Medical Director for the Rock-N-Roll Marathon series, said, "on Sunday morning the safest place to be in Virginia Beach, if you're not standing in an emergency room, is on our race course."

He assured 10 On Your Side there will be at least 30 AEDs and 170 medical volunteers in red shirts, onsite.

Race organizers are setting up medical tents about every mile along the route. Additionally, Virginia Beach is stationing 14 ambulances around the perimeter

"If you don't feel well get some medical attention," Dr. Maharan advised.

He offers these pre-race tips as well:

. •Limit caffeine to just two small cups of coffee on race morning and pass on energy shots and drinks because caffeine can irritate the heart.

. •Take a baby aspirin to eliminate blood clots.

. •Save anti inflammatory drugs like Aleve, Motrin and Ibuprofen for after the race, because taking these aids before can lead to kidney damage.

. •Don't deviate from your training. If you never sprinted the last mile before, don't do it race day.

. •If you notice a runner become weak or wobbly like McCarthy did, help him to a medical tent, not the finish line.

"There's no glory in finishing if you're hurting your body," said McCarthy.
